General surgery is a discipline of medicine focused mainly on the abdomen. It includes both life-saving procedures such as various kinds of colorectal surgery and general surgery procedures aiming at improving the quality of a patient’s life, such as numerous types of bariatric surgery, for example, gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery. General surgeons do not perform heart-related surgeries such as coronary artery bypass but can conduct ones that involve other elements of the blood circulation system, including vascular surgery.

Abdominal Surgery – What Is It?

Abdominal surgery is a general name, under which we understand a wide range of medical procedures. Their common ground is that they involve organs located in the abdomen. As we know, most of a man’s organs are located there, including the heart, liver, lungs, bladder, colon, and many others.

Laparoscopic Surgery and Robotic Surgery – the Future of General Surgery?

General surgeons increasingly depend on technologically advanced machines to perform different types of general surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is a surgery involving the use of a laparoscope – a medical device equipped with a camera and medical tools. Thanks to laparoscopic surgery, a general surgeon does not need to perform a long incision to conduct a hysterectomy or gastric bypass surgery – a few small cuts are sufficient. Robotic surgery goes even further. In it, general surgeons do not directly operate on a patient. Instead, they see the operation site on-screen and use an advanced robot to conduct abdominal surgery.

Bariatric Surgery – General Characteristics

Many general surgery clinics offer different types of bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery is a type of abdominal surgery which allows obese patients to lose weight by interfering with their digestive system, especially their stomach. The most popular bariatric surgery types are gastric sleeve surgery and gastric bypass surgery.

General Surgery Abroad

The world is changing fast and general surgery is changing with it. Many patients who want to undergo even complicated abdominal surgery such as thyroid surgery or colon surgery decide to go abroad in order to get quality treatment for a more affordable price. Thousands of patients every year choose health tourism to deal with their hernias, hysterectomy surgeries, hemorrhoidectomy procedures, and other treatments which they couldn’t afford back home. They know, that general surgeons abroad are qualified and experienced and general surgery clinics in Turkey and other medical tourism destinations are top-end facilities. Among the most popular health tourism destinations for general surgery are:

  • General Surgery in Poland – since its acceptance into the European Union in 2004, Poland is steadily becoming an important medical tourism destination. This includes also general surgery. Polish general surgeons are especially appreciated by Germans and other neighbors, who visit Warsaw, Wroclaw, and other cities in search of affordable appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and many other general surgery procedures.

  • General Surgery in Romania – another rising star among Eastern European countries is Romania. Thanks to its good prices combined with the good quality of general surgery clinics, it attracts thousands of European patients every year. Hysterectomy or hernia surgery costs here are much more affordable and general surgeons have similar experience and education to their Western colleagues.

  • General Surgery in Turkey – Turkey steadily gains a position as the regional and world leader in health tourism. This does not include only Lasik eye surgery, hair transplant, and other cosmetic surgery procedures but also general surgery. General surgery clinics in Turkey offer the most advanced treatments such as laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery for a more affordable fee, which together with its geographical proximity to Europe and MENA guarantees its position in health tourism.

General Surgery Procedures Popular in Medical Tourism

Below we present some of the most common general surgery procedures performed by general surgeons abroad:
  • Gastric Bypass Surgery – this bariatric surgery type involves the separation of one’s stomach into two parts. Those two parts are then connected by a part of the small intestine. Gastric bypass surgery is conducted to achieve a smaller volume of the stomach and create new eating habits. It is a way of fighting morbid obesity.
  • Gastric Sleeve – in gastric sleeve surgery, a general surgeon proceeds to remove a large part of the stomach, leaving only the so-called gastric sleeve. In this way, a patient is unable to eat large portions of food and as a result – loses weight. A gastric sleeve is used to fight morbid obesity, similarly to gastric bypass. Patients choose to undergo this surgery abroad because gastric sleeve costs might be very expensive in their home countries.
  • Hernia Surgery – hernia surgery is a very popular one among patients who decide to a general surgery abroad. A hernia is a situation in which a part of the intestine pops out through a hole in one’s abdominal muscles. It needs to be pushed back and muscles to be sewn in order to prevent such situations in the future. Hernia surgery costs in Western Europe are sometimes quite high and for this reason, lots of patients decide to have it in countries such as Turkey or Romania.
  • Cholecystectomy – cholecystectomy is a general surgery during which a general surgeon removes the gallbladder. It can be performed as a laparoscopic surgery or even as a robotic surgery, guaranteeing lesser amounts of pain and shorter recovery.
