  • Severe protrusion
  • Periodontal disease

How many trips do I need to take abroad to complete the procedure?

You will need 1 trip abroad to complete the whole procedure and follow up with your local doctor.

How long should you stay in the hospital after the surgery?

An overnight stay is not required.

How long is the surgery?

The surgery will take 1 to 2 hours.

What to avoid before the surgery?

Patients need to quit smoking at least a month before and after the surgery. Blood thinners such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, herbal teas, and supplements are forbidden for at least 2 weeks before the procedure.

How is the surgery performed?

Prior to surgery, x-rays of the chin and face are taken and the surgeon decides on which parts of the chin area to modify based on these X-rays.

Anesthesia choice for these procedures can be local or general. Incisions can be created inside, in the mouth or outside, right under the chin.

If the patient requires a chin implant, the surgeon will create a small pocket in front of the chin bone but under the muscle in order to place the implant.

Different types of implants can be chosen, general options are:

  • Depending on the patient’s expectations and his or her facial balance, one of these procedures can be performed: mentoplasty surgery, sliding genioplasty surgery, chin augmentation surgery or chin implant surgery.
  • Bone grafted from the patient
  • Fat tissue
  • Silicone implant
  • Biological inserts
  • An artificial chin implant is one of the most preferred options as it has a lower risk of developing complications such as infections. The surgeon may also create cuts into the jaw bone or remove and reposition the chin bone for a better effect.

Jaw implant recovery time

The average chin implant surgery recovery period lasts around 3 weeks. Patients usually return to work and normal activities in around 2 weeks. Patients need to sleep face-up, their heads should be elevated, for a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks after surgery. It helps control post-op swelling and protect the incisions.

Around 80% of the post-op swelling will gradually disappear in 3 weeks. Patients should avoid chewing for the first few days after the procedure – liquid or soft foods can be consumed during this time.

Chin implant complications abroad

Chin implant surgery risks and complications can include:

  • The shift in implant position
  • Asymmetry
  • Infection
  • Scarring around the incision area

Chin implant surgery side effects can include:

  • Anesthesia side effects
  • Swelling
  • Lower lip numbness
  • Hematoma (internal bleeding)

Chin implant success rate

Chin implant surgery reviews set the average success rate at 94%.

Results are immediately noticeable after chin implant surgery. Patients need to avoid chewing for a few days and also avoid smoking for a month after the operation.

These precautions will help reduce surgical scars and allow the body to heal better. The post-op swelling will pass in around 3 weeks, but the bone, if altered, will continue to heal over the course of a year.
