1. Final consultation with your surgeon

When you arrive at the clinic, you will have a face-to-face consultation with your eyelid specialist surgeon. During this session you are expected to inform the surgeon about your medical record, allergies, and if you’re currently taking any medication.

Even after telling your surgeon about your medical record, it’s mandatory that you go through some medical tests. Afterward, you will discuss the procedure in detail and if you are on the same page with your surgeon, he/she will make an illustration by drawing some marks on your face as he/she prepares you for the surgery.

2. Taking the anesthesia

When the test results are out and your surgeon is satisfied, you will be then given anesthesia. Surgeons usually prefer local anesthesia, but general anesthesia is also an option.  

3. Operation

Once you are anesthetized, the surgeon will start the procedure. For the lower eyelid surgery, your surgeon will make tiny incisions – in predetermined areas – in a careful manner that minimizes scarring. As an example, the natural creases underneath the lower lids are used for discrete incisions.

Your surgeon then will remove surplus fat and skin through these incisions and may also tighten sagging underlying muscles.

For the upper eyelid surgery, your surgeon will create incisions in the natural upper lid creases after the anesthesia. Then the surgeon will remove the surplus skin to eliminate the droopy effect of the upper lids and any partial vision hindrance. Weak underlying muscles are tightened at this stage, as well.

After the saggy skin is eliminated, the surgeon will lift and reattach the remaining skin for a more youthful appearance in the upper eyelids. After the surgery is terminated, the surgeon will close your incisions with sutures.

What Should I Expect After Eyelid Surgery?

• You can wear dark sunglasses on the way home after the surgery because you will be sensitive to light.
• Ointment used during your surgery may blur your vision, which usually disappears within 24 hours.
• You should apply a cold compress every 10-15 minutes as instructed by your surgeon for the first 24 hours after the surgery.
• Do not eat heavy foods for the first 3 to 4 days after surgery and drink plenty of water.
• You can take a shower down the neck at any time after surgery. Do not take a full shower until your surgeon gives you permission, which is usually 5 days after surgery.
• It is important that you rest well for 3 to 4 days after your surgery. Raise your head on 2 to 3 pillows for 2 weeks while sleeping. This will help prevent postoperative swelling.
• Avoid activities such as heavy lifting and exercise, especially in the first week. Your surgeon will tell you when you are ready for daily and sporting activities.
• You should avoid wearing contact lenses for at least 2 weeks after surgery. You are allowed to wear glasses.
• If you have nausea or cold symptoms, tell your doctor so that he or she can prescribe medication for prevention. To avoid sneezing, coughing, and vomiting, it is important to avoid any risk of this type of disease. Because, even if they are reflex movements, they can increase your blood pressure and cause bleeding in your surgical sites.
• Eyelid swelling is usually worse in the early morning and heals during the day while sitting or walking.
• You should avoid applying eye cream or eye makeup for 2 weeks after eyelid surgery.
• Besides your eyes, you may also have postoperative swelling on your cheeks and chin. This will begin to heal 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.
